Today, I want to talk about what it means to give 100%, in our case, on the live music scene. In my opinion, it basically comes down to effectively allocating time and thought spent on intentions, applications, and results.
During band meetings, via google meet or in person, we always discuss what needs fine-tuning to constantly and consistently improve the show and to never become complacent.
Sometimes, musicians can get a bit frustrated because they say that they’re giving 100% of themselves and, in their defense, they are because they’re totally dedicated and proud. But it’s what goes into their 100% that can be the wrong or the right 100%.
So, it starts with how you invest your time from learning songs, rehearsing, choreography, wardrobe, addressing the audience, and keeping your finger on the pulse on every evening’s developments. There are so many intricate details that go into putting a fantastic show together. Otherwise, it’s like driving fully focused but in the wrong direction. If you invest a moment to find out the right direction, 100% you’ll get there.
Here are a few examples of giving 100% but failing:
You’re at a show, the drummer is sweating like crazy, playing all kinds of fills, he’s on fire. From his perspective, he’s giving 100% in that particular song, but it may be the wrong style or attitude because his playing is “over the top” and people aren’t diggin’ it. This can result in losing people on the dance floor, or your audience’s attention because they can’t get into it if they don’t “get it”.
The same goes for singers who oversing. They can actually destroy a popular ballad by riffing too much, changing the melody, or physically over-acting its meaning, which renders a fake performance.
All in all, Band Members must tend to 100% of the crucial elements necessary to create a successful show and evening. They must support one another, carry their own load, and be aware of the audience’s reactions throughout the evening. You’ll know when you feel your band gel, the show’s tight, and you’re captivating the audience. Why? Because 100% of your intentions, efforts, and actions are meeting your goal to achieve success, night after night. There’s no better feeling of accomplishment and it’s your guarantee that you’re doing the right 100%.
